The Fragrance of Christ

2 Corinthians 2:14-17

14) But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. 15) For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. 16) To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task? 17) Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, like men sent from God.

I know I must have read this scripture dozens of times over the years, but praise be to God for new revelation - I’m seeing this for the first time now. So many times, I’ve heard people talk about being able to see Christ in believers; that we may be the only Christ that others see. But as I read this, I wonder . . . how do we smell?

As we exhale the knowledge of God that has been breathed into us, we expel the fragrance of the knowledge of Him! In fact, to God we are the aroma of Christ. Imagine that – as God watches us spread His word, He smells Christ in us. Sometimes I’m so critical of myself, that I have a hard time accepting God’s pleasure in me. But here it is, in His word; His nostrils flare in pleasure as He watches and breathes it all in.

As I read on, I also see what the world smells in us. For those being saved, they smell the sweet aroma of life. But, in contrary – for those perishing, those who won’t allow the life changing seed to be planted, we smell like death. No wonder Christians speaking the word of God sincerely are received with such hostility. We smell like death, like rotting trash – absolutely repulsive to those who rebel against His truth. However, even this is encouraging. It allows us to see the powerful impact of Christ in our lives to those around us. Christ in us changes our fragrance!

Be encouraged. Speak His truth with sincerity, and watch God’s nostrils expand as He breathes in the sweet aroma!
